Listening Skill 1 - Making Assumptions

The Listening section of any language exam measures your ability to understand spoken English. You will have to listen to various passages for one of the three following purposes:

1, LISTENING FOR BASIC COMPREHENSION

Comprehend the main idea, major points, and important details related to the main idea. Comprehension of all details is not necessary.

2, LISTENING FOR PRAGMATIC UNDERSTANDING

Recognize the speaker’s attitude and degree of certainty.

Recognize the function or purpose of a speaker’s statement.

3, CONNECTING AND SYHTHESIZING INFORMATION

Recognize the organization of information presented.

Understand the relationship between ideas presented.

Make inferences and draw conclusions based on what is implied in the material.

As you listen to a conversation, you must make some assumptions about the speakers and the topic.
