Major discovery of (headless) dinosaur - `new' to science
 

The Isle of Wight, off the coast of southern England, is once again the location of one of the greatest archaeological finds of this century.

The Isle of Wight rock formation, known as the Wealden series, …1… and has always attracted geologists and fossil-hunters. It is also where, a few years ago, an iguanodon, …2… , was unearthed.

A year ago this month, another dinosaur was unearthed, this one as large as — but much more complete than — any before, and possibly of a new type. The geologists who discovered the dinosaur remains kept the find secret for ten months …3… .

So far about 100 bones have been found in perfect condition, but they need to be carefully preserved. That's why they are being removed slowly, cleaned and classified, and then they will be dipped in a nylon solution …4… . Later the creature will be assembled and put on public display.

The dinosaur, which was about 15 metres long from nose to tip of tail, …5…, and was a slow-moving vegetarian, a little like a brontosaurus.

Sadly the head is missing, …6…, along with two teeth from another creature, a megalosaurus, that might well have fed on it. Of course …7… might have been carried off by some other creatures, or even washed away.

There has been growing interest in dinosaurs in the past few years and it is hoped that this new dinosaur can be exhibited on the island. Because …8… , the Isle of Wight council is already considering plans to invest £1.6 million in a new 10,000 square foot museum - …9… - in the hope of attracting thousands of visitors a year in the future.
