Who is your favourite relative? Write a description of your favourite relative on the basis of the two model texts. Try to use as many of the expressions in bold as possible.
My favourite relative is my grandfather. I suppose the first thing anyone notices about him is his huge moustache. He has had it since he was eighteen and takes very good care of it. Then you notice his eyes. They are very dark, almost back, but sparkling and lively. He was very tall when he was younger and he’s still quite tall even at eighty-five. He walks with a stick that he has had for years now and he always wears an old back cap when he goes out. My grandmother bought him a new one last year, but he won’t wear it. But the most characteristic thing about my grandfather is his voice. He has the most wonderful deep voice. You appreciate this most when he laughs his big booming laugh. He laughs a lot and always has a funny story or a joke to tell to cheer you up. Once you get to know him better you realise he is an extremely positive and warm-hearted person. I suppose that’s why he is my favourite relative. |
My favourite relative is my elder brother, Tom. The first thing everyone notices about him is his height – he is tall, almost two metres. The second thing is how skinny he is. He is as thin as a rake. He looks as if he has not eaten for months and yet he is always eating. He never bothers much about his appearance, except for his hair. I joke about him looking like an angry hedgehog when he gets out of bed in the morning – his short, brown hair all spiky and sticking out. He spends hours trying to comb it flat but with no success. I’d describe him as patient and kind. He always helps me with my maths, even if it means giving up a night out with his friends. He is also calm. I’ve only ever seen him get angry once. We get on each other’s nerves sometimes, but I wouldn’t change him for the world. |
ARE YOU WRITING A DESCRIPTION? FOLLOW THIS PLAN. 1, Imagine who will read your description and what information will interest them. 2, Think of at least three key words or phrases to describe the person. 3, Describe one feature in each paragraph and add extra information. Do not necessarily stick to the truth: use your imagination and be inventive. Paragraph 1 (Introduce the person you are going to describe) My sister is called Ann and she is 15. Paragraph 2 (Describe one key feature and add extra information) She’s attractive and slim. She usually wears baggy jeans and trendy T-shirts. Paragraph 3 (Describe what is special about that person) What I really like about Ann is that she’s … Paragraph 4 (Finish with a personal opinion) I think Ann is a very special person because … |
